Non-Compensated Adjunct Faculty Position

Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Nursing (CON) offers many opportunities.


What are the benefits of non-compensated adjunct faculty status?
Being a non-compensated adjunct faculty member allows you to contribute to the education and
preparation of the next generation of nurse leaders and opens opportunities to collaborate in clinical
experiences, teaching, practice, and research with CON faculty. Additionally, you will be assigned a NetID and have access to the Hodges Library. The library offers resources, including research and evidence-
based clinical guidelines.

Who is eligible to apply for non-compensated adjunct faculty status?
Preceptors and individuals in non-preceptor roles who serve or are interested in serving in capacities that
promote the CON vision, mission, and values.


What are the categories of non-compensated adjunct faculty status?
There are several types of non-compensated adjunct faculty:

  • Clinical Faculty: non-compensated adjunct clinical instructor, non-compensated adjunct clinical
    assistant professor, non-compensated adjunct clinical associate professor, non-compensated
    adjunct clinical professor
  • Practice Faculty: non-compensated adjunct practice instructor, non-compensated adjunct practice assistant professor, non-compensated adjunct practice associate professor, non-
    compensated adjunct practice professor
  • Research Faculty: non-compensated adjunct research instructor, non-compensated adjunct research assistant professor, non-compensated adjunct research associate professor, non-
    compensated adjunct research professor

Your non-compensated adjunct faculty status is dependent upon your educational preparation,
publications, experience, practice, and research. Requirements for which status you are assigned to are
based on the University’s criteria. The minimum requirement for adjunct status is a Bachelor’s Degree. A
Doctoral Degree is required for all Professor categories.

Non-compensated Clinical Adjunct Faculty

What are our expectations of Preceptors as non-compensated adjunct clinical faculty?
Before a preceptor applies for a non-compensated adjunct position, they must have fulfilled 120 hours of
precepting and received an evaluation from the student and concentration coordinator to determine
effectiveness and fulfillment of responsibilities. Upon affirmation, an application may be completed.


What are our expectations of non-preceptors as adjunct clinical faculty?
Non-compensated adjunct clinical faculty contribute expertise by participating in college activities such
as guest lecturing in a class, committee work, involvement with the Simulation Team, and academic
service learning.

Non-compensated Practice Adjunct Faculty


What are our expectations of non-compensated adjunct practice faculty?
Practice adjunct faculty serve as a clinical and professional resource who support the mission of the
nursing program through their practice-based expertise. As practicing clinicians, they help integrate
education, practice, and community engagement. They contribute specialized clinical knowledge that
enhances student learning, supports faculty development, and model evidence-based, patient-centered
care. Practice adjunct faculty collaborate in agreed upon clinical education activities, provide
consultation on current clinical standards and healthcare trends, and assist in developing and evaluating
clinical learning experiences. They maintain current licensure, certification, and professional
competence while strengthening partnerships between academic and clinical settings.

Non-compensated Research Adjunct Faculty


What are our expectations of non-compensated adjunct research faculty?
Research adjunct faculty are required to work collaboratively with faculty in the College of Nursing.
Adjunct faculty are expected to bring their unique expertise and talent to team science within the College
of Nursing. Their contributions may include intellectual property, access to materials and equipment,
and a network of scientists, to name a few. The effort of the adjunct faculty toward the collaboration is
dependent on the project but all work should culminate into future funded research. The work of the
adjunct faculty should be discussed and agreed upon within the collaborating team in advance of
starting a project.

Appointment Process
Clinical Faculty
After submission of your application and CV, the Office of Academic Affairs will confirm receipt of your
materials, and you will receive notification of the application status. The Progress and Promotion (P&P)
committee reviews new Non-Compensated Adjunct Clinical Faculty applications and recommends
appointment to the Executive Associate Dean of Academic Affairs (EADAA).


If approved, upon receiving and signing an unofficial offer letter from the EADAA, the applicant will
receive an official offer letter from the Provost’s Office for a one-year appointment. Upon receipt of the
official offer letter, the applicant will be asked to successfully complete a background check and submit
an official transcript from the institution issuing the applicant’s highest degree prior to the beginning of
their appointment.


Practice/Research Faculty
After submission of your application and CV, CON Human Resources will confirm receipt of your
materials, and you will receive notification of the application status. The Progress and Promotion (P&P)
committee reviews new Non-Compensated Adjunct Practice and Research Faculty applications and
recommends appointment to the respective Associate Dean.


If approved, upon receiving and signing an unofficial offer letter from the appropriate Associate Dean, the
applicant will receive an official offer letter from the Provost’s Office for a one-year appointment. Upon
receipt of the official offer letter, the applicant will be asked to successfully complete a background
check and submit an official transcript from the institution issuing the applicant’s highest degree prior to
the beginning of their appointment.


Maintaining Adjunct Status
After the first year of service, the P&P committee will review the Non-Compensated Adjunct Faculty’s
contribution and progress to determine appointment renewal. If you meet the requirements of the
position (licensure, certifications, credentialing, etc.) and the need for your assignment continues, you
will receive up to a three-year appointment letter to review and sign, unless otherwise specified.

At the end of your three-year appointment, your contributions will be evaluated. If you meet the
requirements of the position (licensure, certifications, credentialing, etc.) and the need for your
assignment continues, you will receive up to a new three-year appointment letter to review and sign,
unless otherwise specified.
