 Health Information Technology & Simulation

HITSscenario.jpg

The simulation facilities for the College of Nursing are located in two buildings on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s campus. The high fidelity HITS (Health Information Technology in Simulation) lab is a 7,600 square foot, state-of-the art simulation facility located in Temple Hall. The low fidelity Learning Lab, located in the College of Nursing, is a 2,400 square foot facility with 14 functioning acute care beds including wall units.

You will find simulation incorporated into the majority of courses within the undergraduate and masters programs. Simulation allows students the opportunity to practice newly acquired skills and handle patient/family situations not typically seen in the clinical setting. Simulation integration continues to expand as the field of healthcare grows and changes.
The high fidelity HITS (Health Information Technology in Simulation) lab is a 7,600 square foot, state-of-the art simulation facility located in Temple Hall. HITS has space that replicates patient care environments where health care providers learn cognitive, psychomotor (technical), and affective (behavioral) skills using an inter-professional approach.

The lab includes areas that simulate the following healthcare settings; a pediatric suite, medical/surgical room, obstetric delivery room, emergency room, Smart Home apartment space, and four primary care exam rooms.

Inside the lab are manikins for adult, obstetric and pediatric care which allow for high fidelity simulations.  The space includes audio/visual technology that records simulation events, which can be immediately replayed for debriefing in a large classroom setting.

The high fidelity HITS lab is also equipped with 2 telehealth carts for learning.  In addition, the lab uses people to play live patients, which incorporates learning opportunities for communication.

The simulation-based experiences allow students to engage in technology developed by a team of inter-professional faculty at UT.  Docucare is an electronic health record that allows students to view, interact and document on a patient chart.   The SEFM (simulated electronic fetal monitor) App is an application that provides real time tracings for contractions and fetal heart rate for classroom and uses within a scenario.

The low fidelity Learning Lab, located in the College of Nursing, is a 2,400 square foot facility with 14 functioning acute care beds including wall units. This lab is equipped with medical supplies, medications, carts, and manikins that promote skills learning. The lab has task trainers for skill-specific training, some of which are for tracheostomy and wound care, as well as IV and urinary catheter insertion just to name a few.

There are 23 desks and smart board technology in the center of the lab. Two bed spaces are equipped with live feed cameras that will display on an interactive white board.  These camera views allow faculty to zoom into skill demonstrations without students crowding around a bed.

This lab also has supplies for a complete health assessment including a state-of-the-art simulated otoscope with over 1000 images.
