Advanced Preceptor Partners Leadership Training

Advanced Preceptor Partners Leadership Training

The College of Nursing, in collaboration with UT’s Haslam College of Business, has created a newly developed leadership training program for health care providers (HPCs) who are willing to precept UT family nurse practitioner students; those selected for the project will be referred to as advanced preceptor partners (APPs). These preceptors will also be offered the opportunity to apply for nonsalaried adjunct clinical faculty positions to establish formally their ongoing role with the university and the College of Nursing. APPs will engage in a seven-month leadership and mentorship program, the Advanced Preceptor Partners Leadership (APP-L, pronounced “Apple”) training.

Training topics will be tailored to meet the needs of busy preceptors to improve the clinical outcomes and teaching effectiveness. Topics include:

  • Population health
  • Strategic planning
  • LEAN techniques for health care
  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Leadership assessments and management skills for organization success
  • Health care finance
  • Conflict resolution management
  • Health care analytics
  • Streamlining clinic workflow
  • Mentoring strategies
  • Motivational interviewing

Ongoing engagement and retention will occur via faculty liaisons (hired for the project), faculty site visits, preceptor engagement in simulations, and inter-professional team work in the clinics.
