New UT Nursing Dean Inducted into International Hall of Fame
As she begins her tenure as dean of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Nursing, Vinciya Pandian has been inducted into Sigma’s International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame, one of nursing’s highest international honors. The recognition highlights the distinguished leadership, research expertise, and innovative vision she brings to the university as she leads the college into its next chapter.
The prestigious honor recognizes nurse researchers whose work has achieved significant and sustained national and international impact while advancing the nursing profession and improving health outcomes around the world.
An internationally recognized nurse scientist, Pandian has built a career advancing patient safety, transforming models of care, and using emerging technologies to improve health care delivery. Her research has focused on improving outcomes for critically ill patients, particularly those with complex airway needs such as tracheostomy, through interdisciplinary models of care that strengthen communication, reduce complications, and improve long-term outcomes for patients and their families.
“It is an incredible honor to be recognized by Sigma alongside so many distinguished nurse scientists whose work has transformed health care around the world,” said Pandian. “I am eager to continue this work at the University of Tennessee and build upon the College of Nursing’s tradition of innovative research, collaboration, and commitment to excellence in preparing the next generation of nurse leaders.”
Pandian is widely recognized for integrating cutting-edge technologies, including simulation, virtual and mixed reality, artificial intelligence, and robotics, into both clinical care and healthcare workforce education. As executive director of the Center for Immersive Learning and Digital Innovation, she led federally funded research, including an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Learning Lab, bringing together experts in nursing, medicine, engineering, and industry to design and evaluate innovative solutions that make health care safer, more effective, and more accessible.
Her research also spans the global stage through the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative, where she partners with health care professionals around the world to improve outcomes and standardize care for individuals living with tracheostomies across diverse health care settings.
Throughout her career, Pandian has remained committed to advancing interdisciplinary, technologically innovated approaches that improve patient safety, empower clinicians, and enhance the lived experiences of patients and their families. As dean, she brings that same vision to UT, where she will build upon the college’s nationally recognized strengths in education, research, clinical practice, and community partnerships while preparing the next generation of nurse leaders to shape the future of health care.
