The Pulse Living & Learning Community Fosters Engagement Among Nursing Students

The Pulse Living & Learning Community (LLC) is designed for first-year students admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. This community offers a welcoming environment for students as they transition to college life.

“The Pulse is a great way for incoming freshmen to form bonds with other nursing students and take advantage of other unique opportunities that would not otherwise be available to students until their junior year,” said Kallie Hopper, academic advisor at the college. “These include tours of the nursing labs, meeting the administration, and having Q&A sessions with current Nursing Ambassadors. Living in the same housing allows the students in the Pulse to have a close sense of support and comradery.”

The Pulse is designed to aid students in gaining a better sense of their identity as a student and as a developing nurse.

Freshman nursing student Ava Marshall has benefited greatly from her involvement in the Pulse.

“Living in the community has been amazing,” said Marshall. “I love that I have a very similar schedule and classes with my friends. We have also created some of the best memories in our housing community!”

As a member of the Pulse, students are enrolled in LLC-specific course sections that coincide with the first-year nursing curriculum.

“It is also helpful to have so many other students to study with and work on labs,” said Marshall. “There is always someone around that can answer questions.”

The Pulse currently houses 32 nursing students with plans to expand.

“A lot of people told me that living in an LLC would be competitive, but I have not found that at all,” said Marshall. “Everyone wants to see each other do their best and continue to excel through the nursing program.”
